On June 2, 2025, the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO), in consultation with the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), issued a precautionary boil water advisory for specific areas in New Orleans East. This advisory was prompted by a temporary drop in water pressure due to a valve failure at Chatelain Drive, which lasted approximately five minutes.

Affected Areas

Residents and businesses within the following boundaries are advised to boil their water:

  • Hayne Blvd from Paris Rd to Read Blvd

  • Paris Rd from Hayne Blvd to I-10 Service Rd

  • I-10 Service Rd from Paris Rd to Read Blvd

  • Read Blvd from I-10 Service Rd to Hayne Blvd

These areas experienced water pressure levels below 20 psi, which can increase the risk of contaminants entering the water system. Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans

Safety Recommendations

Until further notice, residents in the affected zones should:

  • Boil tap water for at least one full minute before using it for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, or washing food.

  • Use bottled or boiled water for pets.

  • Avoid using ice from automatic ice makers; discard any ice made during the advisory period.

  • Use boiled or bottled water for handwashing, especially for those with weakened immune systems.

For bathing, healthy adults can use tap water but should be cautious not to ingest it. Infants, young children, and individuals with compromised immune systems should use boiled or bottled water for bathing.

Water Testing and Advisory Duration

SWBNO is conducting water quality tests in collaboration with LDH. These tests may take up to 24 hours to complete. The boil water advisory will remain in effect until test results confirm that the water is safe for consumption.

Post-Advisory Guidelines

Once the advisory is lifted, residents should:

  • Flush cold water faucets for at least five minutes.

  • Discard any ice made during the advisory period.

  • Run water softeners through a regeneration cycle.

  • Drain and refill hot water heaters if set below 113°F
